Drive Thru History Adventures

Put the fun in learning history!

By Lynne Westbrook, Publisher Macaroni Kid Blue Ridge February 28, 2018
If you are looking for a fun way to learn history as a family--you have to check out Drive Thru History Adventures!  We were excited to receive access to and review wonderful homeschool videos on three courses - American History, Bible History, and Ancient History.  While I was familiar with Drive Thru History from watching a few shows on television, I was surprised to learn that there are three in-depth course that have a curriculum to follow.  That makes it perfect for a family to view the videos together.  Little ones can just watch and learn, but the older kids (and adults) can go through the questions and study on the topic together.  It really is hard to find something we can all learn together as a family and that is why I love this product!

Drive Thru History Adventures

I can recall taking history in school and getting good grades, but honestly, retaining very little about history.  In all honesty, I found history a bit boring.  Fast forward to a few years back when I began to teach my own children history and, well, I began to find history interesting. Now, I truly enjoy teaching history to my daughters and Drive Thru History Adventures has taken learning about history to a whole new level! While there is a course on American History and Bible History- we started our journey with Ancient History.  Not only are my children learning, but my husband and I are as well.  Take, ancient Greece, for example.  Did you know that the Temple at Delphi lies on fault lines that released hallucinogenic gases that probably "aided" the priestesses in their trances to prophesy the future?  Dave Stotts, takes you on an adventure while he drives through the ancient city and combines a knowledge of ancient history, Biblical history, and modern science.  As an adult, it is fascinating to have this period in history linked to Biblical references of the same time.  It puts all of the pieces of the puzzle together and makes learning so much more fun and applicable!

Each week, you and your family can go on an "adventure" together by watching the video, doing some readings, and answering some questions.  There are 12 weeks of courses for each topic area.  My youngest daughter watched the videos, while my 6th grader completed some of the readings and worksheets.  The readings are amazing.  Not only are you combining the history you have watched on the video, but the readings introduce the writings of Virgil, Homer, Plato, and the Bible for the Ancient History course.  The readings can be accessed with an on-line reader or through downloadable and printable versions.  You can go as in-depth as you want into this curriculum.  It is most appropriate for ages 12 and above, but any age can enjoy.  High School students, however, can reach source documents, expert papers, and articles and use these to conduct further research.  There is no limit.

You can watch the videos and enjoy the course on our computer, tablet, or phone app.  We even found a way to watch on our television so the viewing was easiest for the whole family.  We connected our computer cable to the television and could enjoy the course in the comfort of our living room.  You and your family will love the vast options this program subscription has to offer.  Adventures TV is another fun part of the learning program.  With this you will get to watch all kinds of extras including "drives" through recent holidays, Biblical sites, and behind the scenes look at the series.  I loved the "out-takes" with Dave Stotts.  He is a master of combining intellect, practical knowledge, a passion for learning, bold travel, Christian perspective, and humor.  His levity mixed with serious topics allows the viewer/user to stay with the program and remain interested through historical plots and details.  Adventures TV gives too many bonuses to mention, but The History of Cheese is sure to be one of your favorites. If you don't laugh through this one  you may just be missing your funny bone!
