An American In Paris - Tres Bon!!

The Fabulous Fox Theatre

By Lynne Westbrook, Publisher Macaroni Kid Blue Ridge August 16, 2017

We had the pleasure of watching An American in Paris on opening night at The Fox Theatre.   Playing August 15-20th, this spectacular show has won 4 Tony Awards!  The production is inspired by the Oscar winning MGM movie starring Gene Kelly. My daughter and I were transfixed as we were transported back in time to a Broadway in Atlanta production that felt just like you were on stage with one of the big screen dancers.   Set in a post-war landscape, you will enjoy the romantic tale while being grounded in the realistic landscape of French/German war-time interaction.

WHAT IS AN AMERICAN IN PARIS ABOUT?

After witnessing the horrors of World War II, American veteran Jerry Mulligan decides a fresh start is needed and he moves to Paris, France. Inspired by the creativity and romance which fills the Parisian air, Mulligan sets his goal on becoming a painter. Once he gains a wealthy sponsor for a solo exhibition, his career seems to be on the rise.  Pair this with the fact he has just met a beautiful girl by the name of Lise, his life can't seem to get any better. The glitch- Lise seems unwilling to wholeheartedly return his affection.  As the production plays out the audience is educated on the reasons behind her resistance to love and how this is connected to the previous Nazi occupation.

A show for both young and old, we really enjoyed Gershwin's orchestral music combined with the levity of "I Got Rhythm" and the beauty of the American in Paris ballet!  Don't miss this opportunity for a date night out or introduction to Broadway with your family!
