Coastal Georgia on a Budget

How to Go Coastal - Without Breaking the Bank!

By Lynne Westbrook, Publisher Macaroni Kid Blue Ridge July 24, 2017

We live in North Georgia and have beautiful mountains, streams, waterfalls, and the bounties of nature surrounding us.  We all have times, though, when a trip to the coast to soak up the sun, surf, salt air, and munch on amazing seafood sounds heavenly.  We recently got that desire and jumped in the car to go coastal- Georgia coastal that is!

Did you know, though, that there is so much to do on the coast that won't drain your bank?  Here are some great ideas to satisfy your taste for the coast and still come back with some bills:

Go Camping!  You heard me right - pack up a tent and go to a campground.  Or use the First Time Camper Program to get a few nights in a modern campground and borrowed camp gear for cheap!  This is a great way to camp out without buying all the accessories and still have access to hot showers and electric hookups.  Your kids will love to bike, hike, geocache and fish.  Some sites even have swimming pools, boat rental,  and mini-golf for a fee.

Take to the Beach!  A day at the beach is free and just requires a bit of planning.  Most of the beaches in Coastal Georgia are easy to access and are free (or only require a minimal parking/island access fee). Go when the tide is coming in so your kids can enjoy the water and search for shells.  My daughters spend hours looking for shells and sand-dollars. There are traditional beaches in the area and even a driftwood beach (on Jekyll Island).

Get Crabby... Crabbing is free.  If you are lucky enough to know some locals you can ask for the best spots to go and maybe borrow some gear.  All you need is bait and a net.  For first timers - just tie a piece of chicken or fish to a rope and drop it into the water (best from a low dock) when the water is moving.  Wait for a tug and scoop them up with a net.  For "professional" crabbers there are metal nets with wires to hold the bait- just submerge and check for your catch.

Bike Around...Take a bike with you (or rent one) and bike around the many paths in coastal Georgia.  Our favorite is Jekyll Island where there are bike paths around the whole island.  Take an evening bike tour and explore nature, boardwalks, and historical treasures.  We were lucky enough to see an alligator, many deer, racoon, and turkey!

Enjoy a Waterpark   Summer Waves on Jekyll Island is a bargain.  We had a great time as guests of this family friendly waterpark. Daily admission is only $15.95 for kids (3 and under free) with discounted rates for seniors and for after 4 admission. The rides and attractions include the Turtle Creek lazy river, Frantic Atlantic, and high speed slides.  This park is designed so you can see most rides from a central location- so it is great for parents trying to keep up with little ones!
