Do Opera and Kids Mix? Why- Yes, They Do!

Don Pasquale Opera Field Trip

By Lynne Westbrook, Publisher Macaroni Kid Blue Ridge March 30, 2017

Our children are exposed to all types of media  - instant messages, social media, phone, computers, etc.  Have you ever wondered though, if we are losing the fine art of delayed response, anticipation, and artistic immersion in a world of instant gratification? What better way to create an environment that fosters this artistic immersion than through Artsbridge Foundation Field Trips?  They are dedicated to exposing students to educational performances and creating the future through arts education.

This season we have had the pleasure of experiencing Doktor Kaboom's Live Wire Electricity Tour, the Atlanta Ballet's Fellowship Ensemble of Snow White, Rock the Presidents, Erth's Dinosaur Zoo Live, and finally The Atlanta Opera Presents Don Pasquale.  All field trips are geared toward students and their attention spans.  Each also builds on advance preparation knowledge shared through a detailed field trip guide.  Additionally, the field trips are designed to educate and entertain young minds while exposing them to a variety of educational and artistic strains.

We loved the season and this will be  repeat for our family for years to come!  The opera though- I was not sure if it would reach all students and resonate.  My daughters, 11 and 8, however, loved it!  While it was in Italian and had complex themes, it was understandable to the audience with a small screen for translation.  The view from all seats in the house included the Orchestral Pit.  What a neat view and education on the music beyind the performance and it's importance in the production.  Also, it was a full house!  Completely sold out and full of students that were ready to absorb, learn, and experience the opera (for many their first experience).  This was the perfect introduction to the opera!
