Growing up in Dekalb county some of my closest friends were from other cultures, born in other countries, or first generation immigrants.  Several of my friends were multi-lingual and they had rich traditions passed down from one generation to the next.

First chance I got- I got a job at Delta Air Lines so that I could fulfill my travel bug.  I got to enjoy travel to other countries and experience wonderful cultures and traditions in my travels.  Well- I don't get free airfare anymore, but I still want my children to have a love of other cultures and have some of the same experiences I had.

The good news is that you don't have to travel over-seas to teach your children about other cultures- there are so many amazing opportunities right here in our own back-yards.

Watch the Macaroni Kid Blue Ridge calendar for kid friendly events to gain exposure to cultural events.  In September we have Japan Fest- it is a great family event that combines traditional and high tech Japan. We make this an annual outting and enjoy the performance art, traditional art, technology demonstrations, merchandise, amazing food, adults and kids in kimonos and anime costumes, and a kids craft area.
